The date, “1776,” is known as the year of America's birth. Yet, what do you really know about the story behind the signing of the Declaration of Independence? "1776," the acclaimed musical, will shed some light on this important time in our history.
The musical is being presented at the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach during July. The Willows' Off-Campus Activities Committee has made arrangements for us to attend. Mark your calendars for the 2:00 pm matinee on Sunday, July 18th.
Information regarding the cost of the play and bus donation will be available after July 5th. The Committee will make announcements as well as distribute a flyer to each box in plenty of time for you to reserve a seat. If you have any questions, please contact Jackie Alexander at 206-0949.

Jan Konter, Fran Hunt, Connie and Fred Starr responded to the “Volunteer Today” flyer on the Bulletin Board here at The Willows. Have you seen it? The flyer asks “would you be willing to help inspire a generation of children to become confident and literate for life?” Aliso Elementary School needs volunteers to read with students in the grades K – 6. Currently our four residents are the only volunteers for this program.
This past semester, our residents volunteered on Tuesday mornings, with each volunteer having several groups of 1st-3rd grade students. Groups were small (1-3 students), and the children either read to the volunteer or the volunteer read to them. Each child looked forward to Tuesday mornings with the volunteers. It is reported they returned to the classroom with smiles and a sense of accomplishment and joy. Children were selected by the teachers and often were the quiet, well-behaved students who were struggling academically.
Would you like to volunteer your time to help our local young learners? Please contact Barbara Poizier, at 949-830-4670, or speak with Miss Jan, Miss Fran, Miss Connie or Mr. Fred to get involved. (These are the names the children use for our residents.) Your day will be rewarded with the love and joy seen in the children’s faces as well as the reward of knowing you have contributed to the education of our future generation.

The Orange County Institutional Committee thanks you for the good supply of literature that goes monthly to the O.C. jails. Please clip off the mailing label and bar code before putting the publications in the basket in Hodges Hall.
Right now we cannot use any more Full Text Quarterlies or any 2008/2009 Sentinels, but we welcome recent Sentinels and Monitors. What is continually appreciated is your metaphysical support for this ongoing Christian Science outreach. Include the Deputies and County employees in your prayers as well as the inmates, and of course, for our Christian Science Chaplains and workers.

Ever wonder what to do with these items when you no longer need them? Where do you put up a notice to advertise?
There’s a residents’ bulletin board in the foyer in the Administration Building. On it you’ll find notices about upcoming Christian Science activities, lost and found items, the monthly car wash, and items for sale.
Marlene Fabian, one of our residents, is responsible for keeping the bulletin board current and organized. Your notice should be printed or typed, maximum size 8-1/2” x 11”, and kept to one page. Give your notice to Marlene Fabian, box 222. She will then place it on the board. Sale notices can remain on the bulletin board for up to 10 days.

Mark your calendars for the July 22 Board Dinner program. Our speaker is John Creed, C.S. of Laguna Beach and the title of his talk is “I was not ever thus” from the Christian Science Hymnal (No. 169).
John will tackle a wide range of metaphysical issues. He will use a Sunday School format to talk about how Christian Science operates, what “100% consciousness” is, and the true nature of age and spiritual growth.
John’s preparation for the Christian Science practice started in Sunday School and includes decades of high-profile business experience. He worked for the Charthouse Restaurants for 30 years, including working as regional director of operations, president and, eventually, CEO and chairman. He left the company after taking it public in 1996, thinking it would be a good time to enter the full-time practise. Instead, he was recruited to an executive position with a San Diego company, and worked several more years with the federal bankruptcy court, helping troubled companies create practical plans to reconstruct themselves financially.
His service to church includes 35 years as a Sunday School teacher at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Laguna Beach. He addresses Christian Science Associations and has been published in the periodicals. He entered the public practice of Christian Science in 2009.
John’s talk will begin at 4:00 p.m. in Hodges Hall. Be sure to bring questions!
